Download and Install OptiTools Troubleshooter

1. Download OptiTools

On the OptiTools download page you will find machine specific instructions for the installer so that you can download the the correct OptiTools install.exe for your operating system. If you are using IE as your browser, you can just click “Open this application” directly from the web, or you can save it to your disk and open it locally.

Step 1: Click on the install link for your operating system.

In IE, you will see the following screen:

Click “Open”, and the OptiTools Installer will be started.

If you are using another browser, you will see a screen, which will allow you to save the OptiLink Installer to your disk:

Another alternative is to right click the link, and select “Save Link As…”

2. Execute The Installer

Once you have executed the installer, either automatically, or manually, the Installer screen will come up.

Now click “I agree” to accept the license agreement and click “Next”.

Enter the location to install the software and click “Install”.

Click Finished, and you’re done!

3. Verify The Install

Inside the OptiTools group (in Start/Programs in Windows, or in the OptiTools folder on the desktop for Linux and Macintosh) you will find OptiLink, OptiSpider, and potentially other tools as they are released.

To verify that OptiTools is installed correctly and that it can access the intenet, run the program in demo mode

Step 1: Verify That Your Computer is Connected To The Internet

All OptiTools programs required internet access. Make sure you are connected to the internet now. We recommend that these programs be used with a high speed connection. That is not absolutely required, however, because of the amount of data processed by these programs, they will run very slowly on a dialup connection.

Step 2: Execute The Program

Any OptiTools program you have purchased will operated in demonstration mode until you enter your authorization key.

Windows

Open the OptiLink program by clicking on the Start Menu, then selecting the OptiTools group, then clicking on OptiLink.

Linux and Macintosh:

click on the OptiTools program you want to run inside the OptiTools folder on your desktop.

Some Problems You Might Encounter

My OptiTools program seems to start, then it just goes away.

When you start an OptiTools program it actually runs the program in two stages. The first thing that runs is the OptiTools Updater. It checks your current installation, talks to the Windrose Software website to see what updates are available, and downloads those updates that are required to get you to the current version. Then the OptiTools Updater exits and starts the OptiTools program separately. You will see the OptiTools Updater come up, see it do some checking and then possibly some downloading and then it will disappear, and there will be a short delay while the OptiTools program is executed and it comes up.

If the OptiTools Updater runs and then the OptiTools program does not come up, that is always a problem with the Java install. There may be more than one version of Java, Java is not installed correctly, or the version of Java that is installed is not the latest version. What happens is that the updater can run using a lower version of Java than OptiTools, so it might be able to run, but OptiTools cannot. There might be something wrong with the Windows registry, which again is an installation problem. So if you find this phenomenon, where the OptiTools Updater runs, but the OptiTools program does not, that is a Java install problem.

My OptiTools program interface does not look like your examples.

Your user interface should look like the figures. If it doesn’t then there is some platform specific problem with the way Java is interacting with your video display environment. This has happened in a very small number of cases and it is solvable by either a device driver update or some other installation fixes. To solve this contact our support department.

Step 3: Enter Your Proxy Server Settings Now.

Click Setup on the File menu. The Setup window will appear.

If you use a proxy server, enter the proxy server settings here. The browser you are currently using is a good source for how to set these correctly, or ask your system administrator for assistance.

Authorization Key:This is a string that was sent to you in a “thank-you” email when you purchased the OptiTools program. This key enables the software. Without an authorization key, the OptiTools software allows you to do limited analysis.

Leave this blank until you have verified your proxy settings.

Step 4: Verify That The OptiTools Program Can Reach The Internet

Do an analysis with the program in demo mode. Even before you have entered your authorization key, the program should still be able to operate in demonstration mode, and you should be able to see that it fetches pages from the internet, and does some sort of analysis up to the limits imposed by the demonstration mode. Look at the Log View and notice that there are no I/O exception errors indication that the program was not able to fetch information from the internet. If everything proceeds correctly, then OptiTools access to the internet is good.

My OptiTool program is not able to access the internet

There are two possible causes for this.

1. Incorrect proxy information in the setup screen.

2. A personal firewall: Windows XP Service Pack 2 includes a personal firewall that will interfere with OptiTools. Norton and other vendors also provide personal firewalls for your computer. Those are fine programs, however they have to be configured to allow OptiTools programs unrestricted access to the internet. To learn how to provide unrestricted access for an application, you will have to review the documentation for your firewall program.

"Enter Target URL" is a small horizontal slit and doesn't allow me to put in the url.

This problem does not occur very often, and after several thousand installs of OptiTools, it has always been the result of a Java installation problem. Either you have the wrong version of Java installed, or you have multiple versions of Java installed.

If you have gone through this procedure and your OptiTool program is still not operating properly in demo mode, you should call Windrose Software support. When you call support, please be in front of your machine so that we can perform tests while you are on the phone.
